Montenegro Airline considering Niš suspension

Montenegro Airlines is considering suspending services to Niš Constantine the Great Airport at the start of the 2013/14 winter season after local authorities announced they will no longer be able to subsidise the service to Podgorica. “We have not held talks with Montenegro Airlines since there are no funds for subsidies in the city budget. I am certain Montenegro Airlines will take into account the financial assistance it has received over the past three years and the increase in passenger numbers it has recorded on the route. We believe the airline will continue flying to Niš even without subsidies”, Dragan Bugarinović, the CEO of Constantine the Great Airport says.aerodrom nis

The Montenegrin carrier launched flights from Podgorica to Niš in 2010. The service is vital for the airport as it is not served by any other scheduled airline. The majority of passengers using the service transit through Podgorica and continue onwards to Western Europe. Niš has seen its passenger numbers rise over the past few months following a slow start to the year. In August the airport welcomed 3.697 passengers through its doors, an increase of 28% compared to the same month last year. Figures have been boosted by improved numbers recorded on Montenegro Airlines’ five weekly flights as well as Freebird’s charter flights from Turkey. In the first eight month of 2013, the airport handled 17.285, down 6% on the same period last year.

Mr. Bugarinović believes the airport could see additional flights once the fate of Jat Airways’ fleet of Boeing aircraft is decided. The CEO of Niš Airport hinted the aircraft could go to Jat Airways’ Macedonian subsidiary Aeromak, with Niš playing a central role in the airline’s network. Furthermore, Mr. Bugarinović hopes Air Serbia will recognise Niš’s potential as a possible destination. Niš Airport is currently being reconstructed and its facilities upgraded.

Montenegro Airlines to Baku

The Montenegrin national carrier will launch flights from Podgorica to the Azeri capital Baku this summer, linking the two cities for the first time. Montenegro Airlines will operate scheduled charters between the two capitals starting from July 18 every Tuesday until September 3. The airline has said if the service proves popular it will be boosted by another weekly flight. The announcement comes after Montenegro Airlines recently revealed it would operate flights to the Armenian capital Yerevan from July 18. “The comprehensive network we have offered to passengers this summer indicates our support to the development of tourism in Montenegro, as has been the case all these years”, the airline said in a statement.

The service from Podgorica to Baku is being organised by the Azeri tour operator “Millenium” and the locally based “R-Tours Montenegro”. The national carrier hopes to attract high end Azeri tourists looking to spend their holidays in Montenegro this summer. Last year, Turkish Airlines noted a sizable number of Azeri tourists transiting through Istanbul onwards to Podgorica. However, it is not the first time Baku has been linked with the former Yugoslavia as its national carrier AZAL operates seasonal summer flights to Split since last year.

Meanwhile, following last week’s appointment of Montenegro Airlines’ new CEO, Daliborka Pejović, the government has named the carrier’s Board of Directors. The four member team includes a historian who is also the advisor on national politics to the Montenegrin President, a politologist who is also the Deputy Mayor of the town of Bijelo Polje, a former ambassador and head of the Montenegrin Tennis Association and last, but not least, a road traffic inspector. Together with the CEO, the Board of Director makes all the decisions relating to the airline’s business and operations.

First female CEO for an EX-YU airline Montenegro Airlines

Montenegro Airlines has become the first national carrier in the former Yugoslavia to appoint a female as its CEO. It comes after the Montenegrin government dismissed Zoran Djurišić who has led the airline since its creation nineteen years ago. Daliborka Pejović, a high ranking member of the governing Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), will now lead the carrier. However, the Montenegrin government has missed the opportunity to professionalise the airline’s management. Ms. Pejović is serving as the State Secretary for Sustainable Development and Tourism within the government but will be relieved of her duties as she takes up her new role at Montenegro Airlines. Only two weeks ago Ms. Pejović was named as the head of the Women’s Alliance of the DPS.

Talk of Mr. Djurišić’s dismissal has been ongoing for the past year due to mounting debt and corruption allegations. The airline ended 2012 with a 23.5 million euro loss, despite the government writing off accumulated debt between 2002 – 2006. A report by the Montenegrin State Audit Institution last year indicated the airline had covered up millions of euros worth of debt, a claim the national carrier has since denied. The Institution found that Montenegro Airlines withheld losses in its financial reports and struck off debt owed to Airports of Montenegro, Jat Airways, the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency, Lovćen Insurance Company and the Health Fund. The State Audit Institution concluded that a total of 2.085.000 euros worth of debt had been covered up. The airline has also been under investigation for corruption after trying to set up an airline in Niš and attempting to lease a Fokker 100 jet to an Albanian airline. However, court proceedings have since been dropped without explanation.

Despite some problems in the past few years, Mr. Djurišić must be credited for setting up the Montenegrin national carrier. The airline has grown into a respectable regional airline with a modern fleet and solid route network. With Mr. Djurišić’s dismissal, further changes amongst the airline’s Board of Directors will take place. Ms. Pejović will officially take over on Monday, June 10. The changes at Montenegro Airlines come only weeks before Europe’s biggest low cost airline launches flights to Podgorica.

Montenegro Airlines settling old debts

The Montenegrin government has begun settling Montenegro Airlines’ debts as part of a push to restructure the national carrier. During this year, the government will write off 3.7 million euros worth of debt accumulated by Montenegro Airlines. Last year it provided 36 million euros to the carrier. Furthermore, the government has initiated talks with the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA) in order to settle the multi million euro debt owed by the airline. “We are hoping to solve the issue in a similar fashion Jat Airways settled its debt in 2010 – through compensation”, Sladjana Popović Tarlać from SMATSA says. The government is offering a three star hotel complex in the town of Bijela to the Air Traffic Services Agency. However, Ms. Popović Tarlać refused to comment on the amount of debt owed to the Agency. Mid last year the figure stood at 7.562.142 euros.

Montenegro Airlines states that despite a difficult financial year in 2012 its results are steadily improving and the carrier has seen growth in all sectors, making it one of the most successful in Europe and the most successful in the region. The national carrier handled approximately 601.000 passengers last year, an improvement of 6% compared to 2011. However, Montenegro Airlines could be facing some added competition if Ryanair is successful in launching seasonal flights to Tivat this summer season. In 2011, Montenegro Airlines’ CEO, Zoran Djurišić, said that if low cost airlines were to come to Montenegro they should be required to operate an all year round service and, as a result, struggle. “Montenegro Airlines struggles for eight months while low cost airlines operate flights for only three months and fill their aircraft to London, Paris and Moscow, services which we have nurtured for eight months”, Djurišić said in a interview to the “Dan” daily at the time.

Meanwhile, Montenegro Airlines’ hub airports, Podgorica and Tivat, recorded a combined total of 1.345.150 passengers pass through their doors in 2012, an improvement of 7% on the year before.

Montenegro ends 2012 on a high Air Montenegro

Montenegro ends 2012 on a high

Montenegro Airlines handled 601.000 passengers this year representing an increase of 6% compared to 2011. The result is still some way off from its 2010 record when it welcomed 630.000 passengers on board its aircraft. The airline says that despite a tough financial year its results are steadily improving and the carrier has seen growth in all sectors, making it one of the most successful in Europe and the most successful in the region.

Earlier this year the Montenegrin government provided some 36 million euros to the company in order for it to pay off its debt and restructure. A plan to privatise the national carrier has been postponed indefinitely. Over 2013 the airline will continue operations with its existing fleet of eight aircraft, while a new Embraer jet will join its flock in 2014.

Montenegro Airlines ended 2011 with a loss of just over five million euros. The airline says its finances will depend on sound business decision but also global fuel prices. The carrier did not mention its losses for 2012, only noting that its revenue has increased by 7% compared to last year. Several months ago the Montenegro State Audit Institution accused the national carrier of covering up millions in debt, a claim the airline has completely denied.

Ryanair to Montenegro – take two – Air Montenegro

The Montenegrin government has begun talks with Ryanair over potential flights from Manchester to Tivat this coming summer season. It comes a year after the no frills airline declined an offer from the Montenegrin government to launch services from London, Milan and Brussels to Podgorica. “We have begun talks with Ryanair and we are expecting a positive outcome”, the Deputy Minister for Sustainable Development and Tourism, Željka Radak Kukavčić, said in a statement. She added that the government has made it a priority to bring low cost airlines to Montenegro and improve its connectivity with the rest of the continent. Despite relying on tourism, Montenegro is currently not served by a single scheduled low cost airline.

In March 2012, the Montenegrin government said it had negotiated with Ryanair to launch flights to Podgorica from three cities in June. However, the announcement was followed by an angry reaction from the low cost airline, unhappy that details of the agreement were made public. It then decided not to sign the agreement with the Montenegrin government citing expensive fees at Podgorica Airport as its main motive for staying away. Tour operators blamed the government, claiming it purposely sabotaged the negotiating process to protect Montenegro Airlines.

Within the former Yugoslavia, Ryanair is only present in Croatia where it operates flights to several airports on a seasonal summer basis. From April, the airline will be setting up a base in Zadar. So far, Alitalia has already announced that it will be launching scheduled flights from Rome to Podgorica this summer season while Air Berlin and Condor will inaugurate flights to Tivat from Munich and Frankfurt respectively. Air Berlin has in previous years run seasonal summer flights from Nuremberg to Tivat.
